If the thought of looking at your calendar fills you with dread rather than delight, it might be a sign that it's time to reclaim control over your time and energy.

This might seem like a big task, especially if you're someone who tends to say yes to every invitation or fears letting others down. Taking control of your time and energy can be overwhelming. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you break the cycle of overcommitting and prioritise your well-being.

Pause.

The first step is to insert a pause in your decision-making process. Before committing, ask yourself if you genuinely want to go and why. If your answer revolves around others' expectations rather than your desires, it's time to reconsider. Ideally, your calendar should be filled with events that align with your own needs and values. Making conscious choices that resonate with your values will prevent last-minute cancellations, changes in plans, and the exhaustion that often accompanies overcommitment.

Embrace Uncomfortable Conversations.

Remember, if you decide not to go to an event or meeting, your friends and family should understand and respect your decision. You don't need to give detailed explanations; a simple "I won't be able to make it" is sufficient. It's better to say no upfront than to agree and regret it later.

Be Compassionate.

You don’t have to say yes to an event or invitation simply because there is space in your calendar! Being compassionate towards yourself by safeguarding 'me time' and occasionally saying no is crucial to enhancing your overall well-being.

In the end, reclaiming control of your time and energy isn't about limiting yourself; it's about creating a life that aligns with your well-being and values. It allows you to enjoy the time you spend with others, be present in the moments that matter, and foster genuine connections.

Set limits, communicate your preferences early, and prioritise activities that bring joy and relaxation. This approach will not only enhance your well-being but also contribute to a more sustainable and meaningful life experience.
